Enlighten:  Use Less Energy and Stop the Power Line
PEC is launching a new campaign, Enlighten, to increase energy efficiency, starting with light bulbs.  We are encouraging people to upgrade tens of thousands of bulbs to compact fluorescents (CFLs) which use 75% less energy.  Eventually the Enlighten campaign which will encompass energy efficiency and demand management initiatives of a broader scope, with the goal of substantially reducing energy demand, especially at peak hours, so that a major new power line through Virginia cannot be justified.  Widespread participation in Enlighten’s kick-off light bulb campaign will send a strong message to Dominion that Virginians demand positive energy solutions that respect both our past and our future.

Less is more
Dominion claims that we need a giant new power line to meet rising demand for electricity.  We have a better idea.  Rather than sacrifice our land in order to connect Northeastern cities with some of the nation’s dirtiest coal-burning power plants, it’s time to use smart, efficient technology so we don’t need so much electricity.  And light bulbs are a great place to start.  Did you know that a standard 60-watt light bulb uses four times as much energy as an equivalent compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL)?

Make a change this New Year
Upgrading a light bulb may be the most important change you can make with just a few dollars and a few minutes.  So pledge to change as many as you can in 2007!  Upgrade the lights in your house, make the change at work, help out your neighbors, or donate bulbs to local charities.  A CFL bulb costs a few dollars, but since they last up to ten times longer and use 75% less energy, over its lifetime a single bulb can save as much as $60.  And each bulb you change will save 500 pounds of coal!

Let your light shine.  Keep count
Dominion says that consumers don’t want to use energy more efficiently—and so we need a power line.  Prove them wrong!  To show that we are serious, we need to keep record of how many light bulbs we’ve changed. Upgrading your bulbs will save the energy but only counting them—along with tens of thousands of others—will make a statement!  Take Action simply by telling us how many bulbs you have changed or given away.

Where do I get CFL bulbs?
Just about any hardware or general store sells CFL lightbulbs.  A list of local businesses that are supporting the Enlighten campaign by selling CFL bulbs at a discount is available below.

PEC’s Enlighten campaign is just beginning. Changing tens of thousands of light bulbs will take the participation of businesses, neighborhood associations, civic groups, school groups, churches and more.  Please contact us to find out how you can help bring your community smart, clean technology instead of a power line.

These Bulbs Are Better and Brighter
The new generation of CFL’s turn on instantly and come in all shapes, sizes, and wattages.  A 60-watt equivalent CFL can fit anywhere a standard light bulb fits, and have a brighter, warmer glow than older CFL's.
