I want to express my concern regarding the major commercial development proposals for a Walmart Supercenter and a Wilderness Crossing retail development at the intersection of Route 3 and Route 20 in Orange County.

Although there is a desire for additional shopping and potential employment opportunities in the county, the proposals for Walmart and Wilderness Crossing represent the largest commercial developments Orange County has ever seen. The development will cover more land than Central Park in Fredericksburg (approximately 1,000 acres).

The proposed development would endanger Wilderness Battlefield, which was one of the largest and most important battles of the Civil War. In addition to being adjacent to the battlefield, the proposed development will increase traffic, impair rural, historic, and natural resources, and create development pressures in the area.

This proposal should be fully consistent with the Comprehensive Plan and should include the overall vision of maintaining the rural character of the County. More specifically, the Comprehensive Plan suggests that development on these sites should have a minimal effect on traffic on Route 20; should not increase the pressure for additional residential development; should be consistent with the historic character of the immediate vicinity; and should be shown to have substantial fiscal and employment benefits to the county and its residents.

Please uphold the vision we have established in the Comprehensive Plan and help preserve Wilderness Battlefield and the historic rural landscape of Orange County. After all, there are 4 Walmart stores (3 of them Supercenters) located within 20 miles of this site.  If the citizens express their desire to have this development, the Board of Supervisors should do everything they can to find an alternate location that does not jeopardize the rural and historic resources of Orange County.
