New Rapid Bus Service: Metro's Plan and the Region's Response
People are flocking to transit as gas prices pinch household budgets, and Metro is responding with an aggressive Rapid Bus initiative to provide better transit service to more people quickly and affordably.
Can Metro deliver? How will state and local governments respond? Join us for this forum to learn about plans to expand bus service near you.
Guest Speakers: John Catoe, General Manager, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Neil Pedersen, Administrator, Maryland State Highway Administration Chris Zimmerman, Chair of WMATA Board and Arlington County Board Member
Metro is proposing to expand express bus service on 24 lines within six years, building on its current 5 express routes. This upgraded service will provide easier and shorter trips for half of the growing number of people riding Metrobuses. Over the next 25 years, Metro expects overall transit ridership to grow by 42 percent. To handle the growth, Metro officials are proposing a number of improvements including more eight-car trains, easing access to stations and buses, streetcars and expanding regional bus service. Expedited deployment of new rapid bus routes will take more commitment from state and local governments working with Metro to provide dedicated bus lanes and signal priority. Mr. Catoe will present Metro's plan, then Mr. Zimmerman will facilitate a discussion and Q&A.
